Miwa has trained in and performed traditional Japanese string music since she was a child. When she moved to Colorado in 1996, she continued her study under Yoko Hiraoka, a senior master performer of Japanese string instruments in the Ikuta School. Miwa holds a teaching certification from the Somei Ongakukai in Tokyo, Japan. She has performed on stage at music events throughout Colorado. In addition to koto and shamisen, she also drums for Taiko with Toni.
